In January 2024, Ahmed Abubakr Imam joined the Popular Resistance to defend his community in North Darfur against the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), which have captured much of the region and are accused of severe atrocities. The RSF has created barriers around el-Fasher, making escape perilous for civilians, while both sides in the ongoing conflict have committed grave abuses since the civil war erupted in April 2023.
