Pope Leo XIV’s Historic First Sunday
On the first Sunday in American history with an American pope, Pope Leo XIV, Catholics across the U.S. celebrated with joy and pride, particularly at Christ Our Savior Parish in South Holland, Illinois, where the pope attended as a child. At Masses nationwide, congregants expressed hope that his leadership could attract youth, inspire priesthood, and address immigration issues, while others reflected on personal connections to the pope. Amidst the excitement, traditionalists considered the possibility of a more open approach to the Latin Mass under his papacy.
