Tesla has applied for a permit in California to deploy transportation services with company-owned vehicles and human drivers, a step towards building its own fleet of self-driving electric vehicles. The permit is a prerequisite for the commission’s Autonomous Vehicle Passenger Service, allowing Tesla to eventually deploy driverless taxis in the state. While Tesla aims to launch a robotaxi service, industry experts believe the company is still far behind Waymo in offering fully autonomous vehicles on the road.
