Sam Applegarth, a 31-year-old teacher, took his own life in Dubai after using an unlicensed hair loss drug called dutasteride, which he self-sourced online. Despite having no prior mental health issues and previously using approved treatments like minoxidil and finasteride without side effects, his girlfriend Anya Guy urged others to report any suicidal thoughts related to the drug. The inquest revealed that dutasteride is not licensed for hair loss in the UK, and the doctor noted a potential underreporting of suicidal ideation associated with its use.
