Taoiseach Leo Varadkar has suggested a former Dancing with the Stars winner could make a surprise move into politics.

Speaking in Washington DC, the Taoiseach said he would not take part in the RTÉ dance competition.

And he said Justice Minister Helen McEntee would be a good contestant on the show.

However, he went on to suggest that one of the former winners of the show could enter politics.

The Taoiseach did not name the person, but previous winners of the RTÉ show include Aidan O’Mahony, Nina Carberry, Carl Mullan, Jake Carter and Mairéad Ronan.

“Even though I will never be entering Dancing With the Stars, don’t underestimate the ability of people who have been winners to enter politics,” Mr Varadkar said.

Asked if he would consider going on the show, Mr Varadkar joked: “Have you ever seen me dance?”

“That would not be something I would ever consider – balance and coordination would not be my best strengths, unfortunately. So I will never be performing on Dancing with the Stars”.

Mr Varadkar said he is “sorry to miss the final” but will be travelling home from Washington when it airs on Sunday night.

He added that he doesn’t know who will win, stating: “If you’d asked me a few weeks ago, I would have said that was David from Wild Youth, he was doing so well, but Blu has really kind of come up the ranks since then. So I think it’s wide open.”
