Taiwan’s Defense Ministry detected Chinese naval ships and military planes engaged in training around Taiwan, with no live-fire activity reported. The Chinese navy is creating two walls near Taiwan, signaling territorial claims. The activity comes after Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te’s overseas trip, which included interactions with the United States. Taiwan officials are calling the ongoing activity a training exercise, but are prepared for potential drills or escalation. China, viewing Lai as a separatist, has previously held major military exercises around Taiwan in response to his actions. Taiwan’s military has set up an emergency response center in response to the increased Chinese naval activity and flight restrictions off China’s east coast.

In Washington, days before a murder trial for Kavon Young was to commence, prosecutors deemed the DNA evidence implicating him unreliable, despite it initially matching the victim John Pernell's fingernails with a probability of 1 in 3.4 billion. The private lab responsible for the analysis lost the evidence, preventing retesting, which led to outrage from Pernell's family, who seek clarity on the situation. Young was released after over five years in custody, and the city’s...
