Syria’s Assad says rebel advance a bid to ‘redraw’ regional map

Syria’s President Bashar al-Assad accused an Islamist-led offensive of attempting to redraw the region’s map in line with US interests, as deadly air raids targeted rebel-held areas. Backed by Russia and Iran, Assad’s army is fighting back after Aleppo fell out of government control. The conflict, ongoing since 2011, has left 500,000 dead, with rebels recently capturing Aleppo and other key towns.
