Abdel Basset al-Sarout, a former goalkeeper for the national youth soccer team in Syria, became a prominent protester against the Assad regime. His songs, written by Ayman al-Masri, gained popularity during the revolution. Sarout was killed in 2019, but Masri continues to write songs in his memory.
