A study suggested that drilling operations near Gatwick Airport in Surrey may have caused a swarm of earthquakes, with the epicentre near UK Oil & Gas’s Horse Hill oil field. While the British Geological Survey found no link, a new report by UCL researchers indicated that oil extraction could have triggered the tremors. Using computer simulations, Dr. Matthew Fox and Philip Meredith predicted earthquake frequency based on oil extraction, suggesting a plausible connection between the two.
