A new spinoff series from the Superman franchise, previously titled DC Crime, is in development at DC Studios and HBO Max. The show will feature Skyler Gisondo reprising his role as Jimmy Olsen and is being described as a true crime docuseries. The first season is expected to focus on the DC villain Gorilla Grodd, who possesses psychic abilities following an encounter with an alien spacecraft. While the title of the show has not been finalized, co-showrunner Dan Perrault indicated that several names are under consideration. He emphasized that the series will incorporate elements from crime mystery comedies, aiming to bring a fresh perspective to the superhero genre. Gisondo will also appear in the upcoming Superman sequel, Man of Tomorrow, scheduled for release on July 9, 2027.

Why It Matters

The development of this Superman spinoff highlights the ongoing expansion of the DC Comics universe in film and television. True crime has become a popular genre in recent years, appealing to a broad audience, which may attract new viewers to superhero narratives. The focus on Gorilla Grodd, a character with complex abilities and a history of conflict with The Flash, opens up possibilities for deeper character exploration and storytelling. With the growing trend of blending genres, this series could set a precedent for future superhero projects, combining humor with crime investigation elements, thereby appealing to both superhero fans and true crime enthusiasts.
