1. Controversy over Mavericks’ signing of Jok
The biggest news in the league revolves around the Mavericks’ signing of Shimona Jok (née Nelson) as their 11th player. Fans are questioning how an experienced Jamaican shooter like Jok can be eligible to sign under the new rule.
The criteria for the new rule include being contracted for 2024, eligible to represent Australia, and either aged 26 or younger or having played in fewer than five Super Netball matches. Jok meets these requirements, despite her extensive experience with the Adelaide Thunderbirds and Collingwood Magpies.
The controversy arises from Jok’s international representation for Jamaica and her recent move to Australia. However, she has been granted residency and meets the criteria for eligibility.
The Mavericks faced setbacks with injuries to key players but have found solace in signing Jok. However, some believe the signing goes against the spirit of the rule, which was intended for emerging local players.
2. Teams opt out of 11th player rule
Not all teams have embraced the new 11th player rule. The Lightning, Giants, and Swifts have chosen not to sign an additional player. The decision was influenced by the late introduction of the rule and financial considerations.
The 11th players won’t automatically be on the match-day bench, as only 10 players can be named for each game. It remains to be seen if and how these additional players will be utilized tactically.
3. Favorites for the season
According to Super Netball captains, the Lightning are the team to beat this season. They have made significant signings, including Liz Watson and Courtney Bruce. The Swifts are also considered tough contenders, having finished runners-up in the last season.
Predictions vary, with some captains favoring the Swifts and others mentioning the Mavericks as potential top-four finishers. However, injuries and other factors may impact these predictions.
4. Mavericks’ debut season
Despite being praised for their stylish uniforms, the Mavericks’ performance in their first season is uncertain. Most captains predict they will finish mid-table, with a chance of pushing for a finals spot but ultimately missing out.
Some captains, like Hadley and Ravaillion, believe the Mavericks could surprise and make it to the top four. However, recent injuries have cast doubt on these predictions.
5. Rising stars to watch
While Super Netball boasts many international superstars, there are also rising stars to watch this season. Players like Olivia Wilkinson, Lauren Frew, and Roelene Streutker have impressed in pre-season games.
Keep an eye on Zara Walters, Ava Black, and Erin O’Brien for their standout performances in the midcourt and defensive positions.
6. Rule changes and player feedback
In addition to the 11th player rule, World Netball has introduced several rule changes for the new season. Players have mixed reactions to these changes, particularly the revised short pass rule.
Despite some confusion and concerns, players are adapting to the new rules, which include adjustments to throw-ins, goal counts, and the elimination of cautions.
