Judges Dismiss Deportation Cases Against Two College Students
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

For the second time in a week, immigration courts have terminated deportation proceedings against pro-Palestinian students Mohsen Mahdawi of Columbia University and Rümeysa Öztürk of Tufts University. Both students were labeled threats to U.S. foreign policy, but judges ruled that the Department of Homeland Security failed to provide sufficient evidence for removal. Mahdawi, detained during his naturalization interview, and Öztürk, arrested for her activism, both assert their cases reflect targeted suppression of dissent. Their cases may still be appealed by the Trump administration, as tensions around free speech and immigration continue to rise.
