A police officer in Akron, Ohio, is on leave after shooting an unarmed man, identified as Corey Phillips, multiple times during an incident on November 11. The officer responded to reports of an intoxicated man brandishing a gun; however, body camera footage revealed Phillips was unarmed at the time of the encounter. An investigation by the Bureau of Criminal Investigations is underway, with findings to be reviewed by the Ohio Attorney General’s Office and submitted to a grand jury. Mayor Shammas Malik emphasized the need for accountability and improvement in police practices.
