Assata Shakur, a member of the Black Liberation Army and convicted of murdering New Jersey state trooper Werner Foerster in 1973, has died in Cuba at the age of 78. After escaping prison in 1979, she was granted asylum by Fidel Castro, becoming a symbol of civil rights activism and maintaining a spot on the FBI’s most-wanted list until her death.
