Sydney Roosters forward Spencer Leniu has issued an apology to Brisbane Broncos five-eighth Ezra Mam for a racist remark made during their NRL match in Las Vegas last Sunday.
The Roosters released a statement on Thursday, confirming that Leniu will plead guilty to a contrary conduct charge.
Leniu expressed his remorse, saying, “I want to apologize to Ezra and his family for the hurt caused by my words. I am truly sorry for the distress I have caused.”
He also stated, “I take full responsibility for my actions. Although I used the word, it was not meant in a racist manner. People who know me understand that it’s not a reflection of who I am.”
Leniu has been referred directly to the NRL judiciary for further action.
Roosters CEO Joe Kelly emphasized that the club has a zero-tolerance policy towards racism.
Kelly added, “We extend our sincere apologies to Ezra, his family, and the wider Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community. We offer our support to all parties involved during this difficult time.”
Leniu is scheduled to appear before the judiciary on Tuesday night and is likely to face a significant suspension.
Leniu was put on report during the 69th minute of the Roosters’ 20-10 victory over the Broncos after Mam, who is Indigenous, raised the issue with referee Adam Gee.
Initially downplaying the incident as insignificant, Leniu stated he was unconcerned while the match was ongoing.
Following the game, players from both teams exchanged words as they crossed paths at the shared hotel where they were staying.
Witnesses confirmed that there was no physical altercation, and Leniu was escorted down the hallway by club staff amidst the verbal exchange.
The teams were accommodated on the same hotel floor.
In response to the incident, Broncos teammates Reece Walsh, Kotoni Staggs, and captain Adam Reynolds voiced their support for Mam.
South Sydney’s Indigenous All Stars Latrell Mitchell and Cody Walker also stood in solidarity with Mam on social media.
Latrell Mitchell further advocated for a 12-week ban for Leniu in a social media post, adding, “And some,” on his Instagram stories.
