Former South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol has been found guilty of insurrection and sentenced to life in prison for declaring martial law in December 2024. The Seoul Central District Court ruled that his actions led to significant social costs and disrupted the National Assembly’s functions. Yoon, who maintained his innocence, argued his decree was within presidential authority to prevent governmental obstruction. The court rejected claims of his intention to establish a dictatorship, despite prosecutors seeking the death penalty.
