South Africa police: Officers let ringleader in illegal gold mine disaster escape

A suspected illegal gold mining ringleader, James Neo Tshoaeli, escaped custody with police help after being rescued from a disused mine in South Africa where 246 survivors and 78 bodies were retrieved. Authorities are investigating who aided his escape and said Tshoaeli is accused of assault, torture, and hoarding food from other miners. The rescue operation in Stilfontein ended last week, but concerns remain about potential bodies at another shaft.
