South African government says it won't help 4,000 illegal miners inside a closed mine

South Africa’s government refuses to aid illegal miners trapped in a closed mine in North West province, as part of a strategy to combat illegal mining by cutting off their supplies. Police estimate between 350 and 400 miners underground, downplaying earlier reports of up to 4,000. Ministers of police and defense are set to visit the mine, while police continue to guard the area to capture emerging miners, who are often weak and sickly after weeks underground.
