Bill Gates amassed his wealth through Microsoft, co-founded with Paul Allen, during the personal computing boom of the 1980s and 1990s, becoming the first centibillionaire in 1999. Despite Microsoft’s value increasing significantly since then, Gates plans to donate 99% of his wealth through his foundation over the next 20 years. The foundation has shifted investments, selling off Microsoft shares and focusing heavily on three low-tech companies. Currently, 60% of the trust’s portfolio is in these non-tech investments.
