Emmanuel Gregoire wins Paris mayoral race

The Socialist Party’s Emmanuel Gregoire has won the Paris mayoral race, with the traditional left and right making gains in nationwide municipal elections. The far-right also scored a major win in Nice. Gregoire, backed by the left, Greens, and Communists, secured the mayoralty with 51-53% of the vote, defeating Conservative Rachida Dati. In Marseille, Socialist Mayor Benoit Payan was set for re-election with 56.3% of the vote. The far-right National Rally (RN) fell short in Marseille and Toulon, but secured wins in Perpignan and Nice. Former Prime Minister Edouard Philippe’s victory in Le Havre boosts his potential presidential run in 2027.

Why It Matters

The results of the French municipal elections indicate a shift in political landscape ahead of the 2027 presidential election. The traditional left’s victories in Paris and Marseille, alongside the far-right’s gains in certain cities, highlight the evolving voter preferences. The success of candidates affiliated with the RN suggests a growing support base for anti-immigration policies and right-wing ideologies. These outcomes foreshadow a competitive and diverse political climate leading up to the next presidential race.
