Research from the University of Southampton revealed that about 300 children were hospitalized over a year after swallowing magnets, with 10% requiring life-saving surgery. Notably, approximately 6% of these incidents were linked to a social media trend where children imitated tongue piercings using magnets. Parents are urged to be cautious of toys containing strong magnets, as they can cause serious internal injuries, often without immediate symptoms, and many cases may go unreported due to incomplete hospital data.
