The new Labour government is considering a ban on smacking, following calls from the Children’s Commissioner for England Dame Rachel de Souza. Education secretary Bridget Phillipson stated she is “open-minded” about the move and wants to hear from experts, although legislation is not planned in the near future. Scotland and Wales have already implemented smacking bans to protect children from physical violence as a form of punishment.
