Time has come for reparations conversation, Commonwealth heads say – as UK fails to keep it off agenda

Commonwealth leaders at the Chogm summit in Samoa have agreed to discuss reparations for the slave trade, defying UK Prime Minister’s attempts to avoid the issue. Despite Sir Keir Starmer’s call to focus on the future, the joint statement included language on reparations. The UK government, however, maintains its stance against offering reparations or an apology for its involvement in slavery.
