Despite the UK government’s new Employment Rights Bill, the country will still have inadequate protections for unwell workers, leaving 8.3 million contracted workers earning as little as £3 an hour. Campaigners are urging the government to improve sick pay rates to make them more livable for the one in four workers who currently only receive statutory sick pay, which is a meager £116.75 per week. Dr. Matt Padley from Loughborough University warns that relying on such low sick pay rates can lead to a significant income drop and fail to meet basic material needs, especially with ongoing cost-of-living pressures.

Man, 32, charged with murder of 16-year-old boy after Stockwell shooting
A 32-year-old man named Omar Prempeh has been charged with the murder of 16-year-old Lathaniel Burrell, who was shot dead in Stockwell.
