Tragedy struck when an intoxicated driver crashed into a Michigan business where a child’s birthday party was being held, resulting in the deaths of two young siblings, authorities confirmed.

The devastating incident occurred at Swan Boat Club in Berlin Charter Township around 3 p.m., with the vehicle coming to a halt 25 feet inside the building where the party was taking place, Monroe County Sheriff Troy Goodnough disclosed at a news conference later that evening.

The siblings, a 5-year-old boy and his 8-year-old sister, tragically lost their lives at the scene. Their identities have not been made public, and it remains unclear if the party was in celebration of either child.

A total of 13 individuals sustained injuries, with nine of them facing severe, life-threatening conditions and requiring immediate medical attention. Three children and six adults were swiftly transported to medical facilities via ambulance or University of Michigan medical helicopter.

Additional individuals sought medical attention by private means, although their current conditions remain unknown. Responders described the scene as tumultuous and emotionally charged.

The 66-year-old female driver was apprehended at the site on suspicion of driving while intoxicated and causing fatalities. Her identity was withheld, and further legal actions are expected to be taken against her.

Authorities suspect that the driver may have visited a nearby bar and grill, prompting an investigation into her activities prior to the tragic incident.

Efforts are underway to gather information from the establishment, which has not issued any statements in response to the incident.

Located in Newport, Swan Boat Club is situated approximately 30 miles south of Detroit on Lake Erie. The club, which offers membership and dock services, announced on social media that it will remain closed for the weekend, urging prayers for all affected individuals and families.
