Shoplifting in England and Wales has reached a record high with nearly half a million offences reported last year, according to new Office for National Statistics data. The alarming figures show a 23% increase in shoplifting crimes, with 1,350 incidents occurring daily. Retailers are warning that crime in shops, including theft and violent incidents, is escalating out of control, with over 20 million theft incidents costing retailers £2.2bn in losses.
