The latest Afrobarometer Pan-Africa Profile reveals that the share of Africans experiencing severe material deprivation has reached its highest level in 25 years, with most countries losing gains in poverty reduction achieved in the early 21st century. The report, based on data from 39 African countries, suggests that increased corruption may be contributing to resurgent poverty. Majorities report lacking cash income, medicine, food, clean water, and cooking fuel, with rates of severe lived poverty affecting 24% of citizens, varying across the continent.
