The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) has proposed a rule to encourage work and self-sufficiency among public housing and Section 8 rental assistance recipients. In 2024, nearly half of non-elderly, able-bodied households receiving assistance had no one working. The proposed changes aim to limit long-term dependency on housing support, following Arkansas’ 2023 Housing Welfare Reform Act, which mandates work for able-bodied recipients. HUD estimates the reforms could help between 19,000 and 79,000 families transition out of subsidized housing in the first year, allowing new families to access assistance.
