Russia launches hypersonic missile attack on Ukraine capital

Russia has launched a mass missile attack on Kyiv, utilizing its hypersonic Oreshnik ballistic missile, capable of carrying nuclear or conventional warheads. President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed the missile struck the city of Bila Tserkva, resulting in at least two fatalities and 56 injuries. The Russian defense ministry stated the assault was a response to Ukrainian attacks on Russian civilian facilities. This represents the third deployment of the Oreshnik in Ukraine, a weapon that Russian President Vladimir Putin claims can travel at ten times the speed of sound and penetrate missile defenses. The coordinated attack involved approximately 600 strike drones and 90 various missiles, with Ukrainian air defenses managing to intercept over 500 drones and missiles.

Why It Matters

The use of the Oreshnik missile signifies a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, highlighting the increasing intensity and destructive capability of the warfare. Since the invasion began in 2022, both nations have engaged in a series of retaliatory strikes, with civilian infrastructure often caught in the crossfire. The psychological impact on residents in Kyiv, as evidenced by their accounts of fear and devastation, underscores the broader humanitarian crisis resulting from the conflict. As the situation continues to evolve, the implications for regional stability and international security remain critical.
