Rubio says El Salvador will house deportees from U.S., including Americans

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio met with President Nayib Bukele in El Salvador, where Bukele offered to accept deportees from the U.S., including violent American criminals. The Trump administration has no current plans to deport American citizens, but Bukele’s offer is significant. Rubio was in El Salvador to push for stricter immigration policies and regional cooperation. Bukele’s offer is part of a “safe third country” agreement, allowing the U.S. to deport non-Salvadorean migrants to El Salvador. Human rights activists have raised concerns about El Salvador’s treatment of asylum seekers and refugees under such agreements.
