Royal Mail has introduced a solar-powered “postbox of the future,” featuring a built-in barcode reader and a larger hatch for parcel drop-offs, marking the most significant design change in over 175 years. This innovation aims to leverage the growing parcel market amidst declining letter volumes, enabling users to scan barcodes for package submissions and request proof of posting through the Royal Mail app. The pilot program will initially test five units in Hertfordshire and Cambridgeshire, coinciding with Royal Mail’s ongoing modernization efforts and a potential sale to Czech billionaire Daniel KÅ™etÃnský.
