AI isn’t ready to replace human coders for debugging, researchers say

AI has made significant strides in software development, from “vibe” coding to GitHub Copilot, and startups utilizing LLMs for quick applications. However, claims of AI agents replacing programmers soon are unrealistic due to models struggling with debugging, which consumes most of a developer’s time. Microsoft Research has developed debug-gym, a tool allowing AI models to debug code repositories with better results but still far from human developers’ capabilities.
