May Mackie, who passed away in 2024 at age 99 in Qualicum, B.C., was engaged to British WWII pilot Hubert (Hugh) Smith, whose silver wings she wore in a cherished photo. After his tragic death in a plane crash in 1946, May kept the wings for 80 years, revealing a poignant side of her life unknown to her family. Her memories of Hugh lingered deeply, illustrating the lasting impact of their love. The wings have since been reunited with the Smith family and are now displayed at the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum.
