Relative of Assad regime’s disappeared speaks of anguish in search for truth and justice

Obeida Dabbagh’s brother Mazen and nephew Patrick, Syrian-French nationals, were arrested by Syrian authorities in 2013, held for years, tortured, and falsely declared dead in 2018. They were not involved in protests against President Bashar al-Assad but were victims of arbitrary arrests and human rights abuses. The family fought for justice through legal action, resulting in three Syrian officials being sentenced in absentia for crimes against humanity. The case highlights the global fight against impunity for war crimes and the importance of international human rights frameworks, such as the International Convention for the Protection of All Persons from Enforced Disappearance.
