UN refugee chief calls for more help for Syria as refugees begin to return en masse

The UN refugee chief reported that around 200,000 refugees have returned to Syria from neighboring countries since Bashar Assad’s government was overthrown last month, with more considering going back; however, sustainable living conditions are necessary for them to stay. The lifting of Western sanctions on Syria is crucial for refugee return, as over 4.7 million refugees are registered with the UNHCR in neighboring countries, with some internally displaced Syrians also returning home, including controversial releases of detainees from al Hol camp by Kurdish authorities.
