The Royal Society warns that while reducing sunlight reaching Earth through solar radiation modification (SRM) could mitigate climate change effects, it carries significant risks. Two proposed methods—pumping reflective particles into the atmosphere and spraying salt into clouds—are deemed technically feasible. Although SRM may provide temporary relief, it does not address the root causes of climate change and could lead to severe weather disruptions if mismanaged. Global emissions reductions appear unlikely to keep temperatures below the critical 1.5C increase.
