Kino Hoki Matete, the first woman to receive preventive detention for serious violence, is set to serve 20 years in prison before her release consideration in 2026. At 45 years old, Matete has a lengthy criminal record, including significant violence and drink-driving offenses, leading to her indefinite sentence in February 2006. Notably, Matete now identifies as male and was referred to with masculine pronouns during a recent Parole Board hearing.
