A Merseyside council is investigating one of the largest flytips in British history, with 30,000 tonnes of illegally dumped rubbish found in Kirkby, near the M57. The Environment Agency has closed the site, which was first reported by a passerby in November when unauthorized diggers were seen working there. Local councillor Graham Morgan expressed outrage over the environmental impact and called for prosecution of those responsible. The growing issue of waste crime in the UK includes numerous illegal dump sites, some containing hazardous materials.
