Province targets impaired drivers, car thieves with tougher penalties

The Safer Roads and Communities Act, a new law in Ontario, imposes tougher penalties for impaired driving and auto theft. Offenders causing death while impaired face indefinite licence revocation, while auto thieves face minimum 10-year licence suspensions. The law also allows courts to prohibit drivers from having any alcohol or drugs in their systems, increases administrative licence suspensions, and grants new powers to MTO enforcement officers for traffic stops and commercial driver training program review.
