The EU has mandated standardised USB-C charging ports for all new mobile phones and portable electronic devices sold in the region, aiming to reduce electronic waste, increase consumer convenience, and harmonise fast charging technology. The new rules, effective from December 2024 for various devices and April 2026 for laptops, will help save consumers money by eliminating the need for unnecessary charger purchases and encourage reusing chargers to reduce environmental impact. Manufacturers have been given a transition period to comply with the EU’s Common Charger Directive, approved in October 2022.
