Pope Leo XIV’s Inauguration
Pope Leo XIV, the first American pontiff, arrived for his inauguration at St. Peter’s Square, where approximately 250,000 people gathered to witness the event. Riding in a specially designed popemobile, he greeted well-wishers and was accompanied by notable guests including US Vice President JD Vance and Ukraine’s leader Volodymyr Zelensky. Elected on May 8, the 69-year-old pontiff, born Robert Prevost in Chicago, prepared for his role by watching the Oscar-winning film “Conclave,” showcasing a sense of humor amidst the responsibility of his new position.
