Poland’s defence minister stated that Russian aircraft were “escorted” from the area and did not pose an immediate security threat, following the interception of a Russian reconnaissance aircraft near the border of Polish airspace after tracking suspected smuggling balloons from Belarus. The Polish Air Force visually identified and monitored the Russian aircraft over the Baltic Sea, while also tracking unknown objects believed to be smuggling balloons from Belarus. The incidents were deemed not to be a direct danger to Poland’s security, with nearly 20,000 soldiers overseeing safety during the Holidays. The situation comes after a previous incident where NATO forces intercepted Russian drones over Polish airspace, leading to a UN Security Council discussion on the violation of international laws.
