This week, be prepared for another plenary session of the European Parliament focusing on economic and financial issues, leading up to a special EU summit in Brussels (17-18 April) centered on competitiveness and the economy.
MEPs will gather in Brussels on Wednesday and Thursday (10-11 April) for the second to last plenary session before the European elections in June, with the final session in Strasbourg later this month.
The agenda includes final votes on the migration and asylum package, energy and electricity market reforms, and a royal address by His Majesty King Philippe of Belgium.
Another important vote is scheduled for Wednesday, where the Parliament is set to adopt its stance on the pharmaceutical package, aimed at improving access, availability, and affordability of medicines in the EU, especially addressing medicine shortages.
MEPs will also discuss the early release of frozen EU funds for Hungary, the lack of progress in the Article 7 rule of law procedure, Chinese police activity in Europe, and the outcome of the Russian presidential election.
Former Italian prime minister Enrico Letta will discuss the future of the single market with the commission on Wednesday, ahead of presenting his report to EU leaders on 17 April, proposing recommendations to enhance the single market.
Additionally, a report on revitalizing the EU economy to compete with China and the US by former ECB president Mario Draghi, commissioned by EU commission president Ursula von der Leyen, is expected by the end of June.
Thursday will see the Eurogroup meeting in Luxembourg to examine euro area competitiveness, trade performance, and risks of trade fragmentation, with a focus on the digital euro.
Finance ministers will convene the following day in Luxembourg to adopt conclusions on the post-pandemic Recovery and Resilience Facility (RRF) implementation and discuss the economic impact of Russia’s aggression against Ukraine.
The S&D group will assess the impact of EU sanctions against Russia in the presence of EU commission vice-president Valdis Dombrovskis on Tuesday.

On Tuesday, the Renew Europe group will host an event on digital progress during the last mandate, with EU commissioners Thierry Breton and Margrethe Vestager discussing remaining challenges and opportunities post-June elections.
Lastly, the commission and EU agriculture ministers will convene for an informal meeting in Genk, Belgium on Tuesday, focusing on strategic autonomy in the protein sector among other topics.
