Mariela Gomez, a Venezuelan immigrant in the US, returned to Venezuela after being deported by the Trump administration. Facing unemployment and poverty, she spent Christmas in Venezuela for the first time in eight years, unable to afford traditional dishes. Gomez’s journey back from the US involved crossing Central America and sitting on petrol tanks in a cargo boat. Due to Trump’s crackdown on immigration, thousands of migrants, mostly from Venezuela, have returned to South America. Gomez reunited with her daughter and hopes for a job and good health in the new year.
