Rebranded AI Security Institute to drop focus on bias and free speech

The Britain’s AI Safety Institute will shift its focus from bias and free speech to concentrate on crime and national security issues, rebranding as the AI Security Institute (AISI). Technology Secretary Peter Kyle will announce the changes at the Munich Security Conference, introducing a new “criminal misuse” team in partnership with the Home Office to protect citizens and allies from potential threats posed by AI. Established in 2023, the institute aims to advance knowledge of AI safety by addressing societal impacts, autonomous AI risks, and safety measures for AI systems.
