Former Peruvian President Pedro Castillo was hospitalized after starting a hunger strike in protest of his ongoing rebellion trial, where he faces 34 years in prison for dissolving Congress and ruling by decree. Castillo, who calls his trial politicized, was removed from office in December 2022, leading to three months of protests and dozens of deaths. A former rural school teacher with no political experience, Castillo also faces a corruption investigation from his time in office.
