New Invasive Snail Species Discovered in P.E.I.

A recent survey on Prince Edward Island discovered an unidentified freshwater snail, believed to be the invasive big-eared radix, not previously found in the Maritimes. Reported by aquatic species technician Jess Dewey, the snail was located in Andrew’s Pond and may have been introduced through improper aquarium disposal. Nature P.E.I. is awaiting genetic testing results, emphasizing the need for further research on local freshwater snails. The council’s “Don’t Let it Loose” program aims to prevent such introductions and encourages ethical surrender of pets.
