Shah has been fined 20 million Pakistani rupees ($71,488) by the Pakistan Cricket Board for a tweet criticizing Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz’s attendance at the Pakistan Super League’s opening match during an economic crisis. The tweet, which has since been deleted, questioned Nawaz’s presence at the event. Shah apologized, claiming his account was hacked, and has made changes to prevent future incidents. The PCB described it as the largest penalty in Pakistan cricket history, equivalent to eight months of Shah’s salary.

Why It Matters

The incident highlights the influence of social media in sports and the consequences of players publicly criticizing political figures. The fine serves as a reminder for athletes to be mindful of their online presence and the potential repercussions of their actions. Additionally, it underscores the challenges faced by Pakistan’s cricket community amidst economic difficulties and restrictions on public events due to the ongoing fuel crisis.
