Palestinians hope ‘No Other Land’ Oscar win brings help as they face possible Israeli expulsion

Israeli troops recently tore down a shed belonging to a Palestinian family in al-Tuwaneh, West Bank, as part of ongoing destruction targeting hamlets in the area. The documentary “No Other Land,” which won an Oscar, depicts the struggles of the community and was celebrated by residents. The film, co-directed by Basel Adra and Yuval Abraham, highlights the destruction in Masafer Yatta and has won international awards. The area has faced threats and pressure since the film’s release, with increased military presence and harassment. Masafer Yatta, designated as a live-fire training zone by Israel, has been the subject of a 20-year legal battle resulting in an expulsion order upheld by the Supreme Court in 2022. Despite this, residents have remained, facing regular demolitions and fearing outright expulsion. The film has sparked controversy in Israel, with criticism for its portrayal of the conflict and the filmmakers’ intentions. Israeli settlers have established outposts around the village, leading to attacks and intimidation against Palestinians in the area.
