In 2025, the International Federation of Journalists reported that 128 journalists and media workers were killed globally, with 56 of them being Palestinian, making Palestine the deadliest place for journalists. The Middle East was the most dangerous region overall, with 74 deaths. The report also highlighted Israel’s killing of Al Jazeera journalist Anas al-Sharif as emblematic of the violence faced by journalists, along with a deadly attack on a Yemeni newspaper office. Additionally, the Asia Pacific had the highest number of imprisoned journalists, with China and Hong Kong leading in detentions.
